Are the Winds of Change Blowing?

When we reflect back on our lives, we see change—lots of it. Change often signals movement and growth because it resists stagnation. One of the definitions of change is the act or process through which something becomes different.

Not all change is good, and that’s why it’s important to surround ourselves with Godly, wise counsel. But even change that is good, might not always seem good (at first glance) because it requires embracing something new while at the same time letting go of something familiar and comfortable.

Most of us like to be comfortable! If we are honest with ourselves, we don’t really enjoy having our boat rocked by the wind and waves of change. Beginning a new venture can look pretty scary.

But when God is in the wind behind the change of season, we need to row in the direction the wind is blowing.

Resistance to change makes transition much harder. Think of it like this: if the fledgling eagle—comfortable and warm in its nest—didn’t get pushed out at the right time (timing is important), it would not have learned to fly and soar to the heights it was created for.

So what is the “right time”? The right time is when you are experiencing a “nudging” that is persistent and you know that God has been preparing and equipping you for what’s ahead. Remember that there is wisdom to be had in surrounding yourself with Godly, wise counsel to help navigate the landscape in times of transition.

If the fledgling eagle was asked: Are you ready to fly? its answer probably would have reflected some self-doubt and a little trepidation. Mumma eagle had to gently nudge her chick towards the edge of the nest. The view from the edge of our comfortable nests can seem a scary place because we haven’t ventured there before. It’s full of new vision, new experiences and new challenges.

You may have some big self-doubts right now about new opportunities or letting go of some old things. If your proverbial nest (or boat) is becoming uncomfortable, then perhaps a change of season is in the wind?

Isaiah 54:2 says: “Enlarge the place of your tent, stretch your tent curtains wide, do not hold back; lengthen your cords, strengthen your stakes”. What happens when the tent pegs get pushed out? The tent skin has to do some stretching from its comfortable place to meet the pegs! But the end result is the expanded reach and capacity of the tent. You’re the tent!

So even though change can sometimes be painful and seem difficult, remember that when the fledgling eagle fell from the nest and began to spread its wings, right above it, on the journey, was the shadow of two very large and powerful wings. It was not alone! Neither are you!

Two things I love to do—to write about, and to teach God's amazing Word—thus the name of this blog site: Wired for Word. For many years I have been actively involved in a number of church ministries: Women's Ministry, Helps Ministry, Bible teaching and pastoral care. My heart is to touch lives with God's Word—to express from heaven, words that are divinely purposed for you in your now season—words that have the power to heal, to unlock, to inspire, to encourage... and instruct. I pray they will be anointed words for an appointed time in your life. I truly hope that Wired for Word will become a part of your life—even if only for a season!
